There are many biographies of Benjamin Franklin but only one autobiography. If you can only read one book about Franklin may I suggest you try to find a copy of his. I have two copies as my original copy is in shreds and I don't want to be without one.
First off, Franklin is as complex a character as any of us. He was self-serving, while at the same time, self-giving. He was tolerant, yet revengeful. He gave good advice but rarely applied it to himself. Yet, he was the quintessential American, one of the most famous of our Founding Fathers and man who colored everything he touched with bold, neon print.
What I learned from Franklin, besides giving thought to his sage, quicky quotables, was how he handled his own inadequacies. He did something about them. He married the woman he had neglected, due to his trip to England, out of guild, but later regretted it. Also, because of guilt he said, "I made my brother ample amends for the service I had deprived him of by leaving him so early." Franklin, not a religious man, nonetheless, had a code of morality that forced him to act.
His is people as well as events and reading Franklin writing to his son about his own life is an insightful glimmer to history. Granted, it is from his point of view, how he lived through it, reacted and contributed to it. It's the kind of history that seeps into the subsconsciouse while dipping into juicy personal stuff.
Trust me, Franklin's autobiography trumps all other efforts to describe him. It is a true literary classic that is unparalled. You thank me for suggesting it and good luck in finding a copy.
